Werewulf [2026]

Stay on the path and beware of the moon because director Robert Eggers’s returns with his latest horror offering, Werewulf, an original tale exploring another mythological monster after the excellent Nosferatu [2024].

Set in medieval Britain, Werewulf stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as a cursed man, born or sacrificed to carry the transformative werewolf gene of the title. True to other werewolf films such as An American Werewolf In London, the film adopts the perspective of the predator, not his victims, as he struggles with the affliction and is hunted down…I mean, I lost count of the number of times they said the word 'cursed' in the trailer which labours the point that he's probably a nice guy, really.

Werewolves have long been overlooked in horror mythology, and I've always been a huge fan, so I'm really excited to watch Eggers’s take on the genre in an olde world British setting, filmed on Dartmoor, Devon. Surely this dark interpretation can best the recent Universal Studio’s Wolf Man [2025] depressing and bloodless effort, which used the analogy of mental health and disease. Hopefully it's more similar to the classic Hammer Horror The Curse Of The Werewolf [1961] which is well worth seeking out while you wait.

The film also stars Bodhi Rae Breathnach and long time Eggers collaborator, William Dafoe.

Werewulf is available in cinemas from December 2026.
